Bernard Schaetten, 97 years old, passed away at Timber Oaks Assisted Living in Union Grove, WI on Sunday, June 14, 2015. He was born August 19, 1917 to the late John and Marie (Irion) Schaetten in an old farm house located on Hwy KD near Twin Lakes and Bassett, WI. It is now owned by the LaSalette Missionaries. He was married to Marie Fiegel in the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, NV on May 1, 1965.


During WWII, he served as an aviation (crew member) mechanic for PB4 Bombers ¿ where they trained pilots to fly bombers. He made chief aviation mechanic and was sent to the Island of Guam for duty with ¿CASU¿ 12 to supply aircraft carriers with fighter planes in the Pacific to fight the Japanese. Nearby Tinian Island had the atomic bombs stored there to drop with the B-29 bombers.


After the end of WWII and completion of his 20 years in the U.S. Navy, he worked for the Antioch High School, doing custodial work, bus driving, and painting the complete school ¿ inside and out. He received two commendations, one from each of two different school board Presidents. He was a lifetime member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilmot, WI.


Bernard is survived by four daughters, Darlene Burchell, Christine Alton, Marcine (Leslie) Reeck, and Bernene Kingery; and a stepson David (Joyce) Fiegel. He is further survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; seven siblings; 2 infant sons; three sons-in-law, Joe Alton, Larry Burchell, and Robert Kingery; two grandchildren, Shawn Burchell and Dawn Marie Burchell; and a great-grandson.
