Heinrich Detlef Petersen and his wife, Johanne (Nee Husberg) arrived in East London on the Saturnus on 3rd Jan 1878. He was a hotelier and operated hotels in Berlin and at the Kei River crossing
I was born in Scheswig Holstein, a Danish Independent Duchy, which was annexed by Bismarck to Germany in 1874. In 1877 I emigrated with my wife, Ptina, to South Africa, and established hotels along the postal route from East London to the Kei River. These hotels were the Kwelegha, Mooiplaats, Berlin, and Kei Bridge hotels. I became a member of the Divisional Council, and was instrumental in getting the bridge built over the Kwlegha River, which was named the Petersen Bridge. The original iron bridge still stands alongside the bridge over the Kwelegha river on the National highway from East London to the Transkei.
I had two sons and 6 daughters.
