HOLDEN - Anker J. Nielsen Jr., 96, of Bailey Road, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, June 19, 2014. Mr. Nielsen was born in Holden on July 31, 1917, the son of Annie D. (Gage) Wilson and Anker J. Nielsen Sr.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Pamela N. Thomas-Nielsen of Holden; a son, James A. Nielsen; two daughters, Susan E. Downer and Joan E. Polos; three grandchildren, Courtney L. Nielsen, Tyler J. Nielsen and Tina N. Lloyd; two great grandchildren, Lindsay and Jalen Lloyd; and several grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former wife of 64 years, Inga A. (Assarson) Nielsen in 2004 and four sisters, Elnora, Ruth, Anna and Esther.
Mr. Nielsen graduated from Holden High School with the class of 1935. He embarked on a noted career in the manufacturing industry while still a student of Holden High School, starting at the Olson Manufacturing Co. in Worcester. He advanced to the position of plant supervisor before moving to OMCO Manufacturing Inc. in Holden, retiring as President in 1982. Mr. Nielsen later utilized his wealth of knowledge and founded Anker Manufacturing Co. His creativity, precision and pragmatism were evidenced in over 25 patented inventions of his design.
He was a skilled pilot and had served in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. He enjoyed flying single engine aircraft and was a 60-year member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). He served as President of Holden District Hospital for seven years. Mr. Nielsen also served several years as Commissioner of the Holden Municipal Light Department and was a member of the Worcester Rotary Club. Those close to him also remember his love of playing horseshoes, candlepin bowling and hunting.
Mr. Nielsen was a 50-year member of the First Baptist Church of Holden where he served in numerous capacities, including as Moderator and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and leaves many dear friends. He is best remembered for his strong faith and philanthropic support of the church and Baptist missionary causes.
