| Död | 1909 Marlborough, Nya Zeeland3) | An old resident of Mahakipawa, Mr Andres Jonson, died on Friday at the Picton Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for chronic rheumatism. Mr Jonson, at Press states, worked at the Anikiwa saw- mills in 1865, and was later in part- nership with Mr Nelson in the King Solomon Mine. He was a native of Sweden. The funeral took place on Sunday, the Rev. T. J. Smith being the officiating minister. |

Anders Johnson arrived in Havelock on the ship ¿Brandy Sweden¿. Anders was a ships carpenter by trade and had jumped ship in Havelock while ashore with the mate arranging water supplies for the ship. They had an old score to settle and the mate got the worst of the encounter. Anders then made speed to Canvastown staying at Mrs Wilson¿s Trout Hotel. He was to stay there until the ship sailed, this then made him a free man. He worked on the Buller goldfields and ship building in Takaka.
In 1873, Anders Jonson met Barbara Campbell Patterson at Mahikipawa and they were married on October 3rd 1874.
The couple had 10 children born during the marriage. In 1905, he and Barbara were living at Cullensville, Mahakipawa in the Wairau district and farming. He involved himself in community affairs and was on the committee for Cullensville school. Anders was naturalised as a New Zealander on 25 October 1905 just 4 years before his death. Anders died on December 24, 1909 and is buried at Picton Cemetery. BLK 19, PLOT 33.
